Cory Booker releases confidential documents, GOP warns of consequences

Piper Perabo

Kavanaugh said that all he had written back in the email was "who signed this?" - evidence, he said, that he believed the letter had been made public by the time it was in his possession.

During the confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Kavanaugh said: "As a general proposition I understand the importance of the precedent set forth in Roe v. Wade".

On Wednesday, Kavanaugh answered questions about his views on executive power, abortion, and gun laws, but mostly declined to comment on issues that could be part of a future case before the Supreme Court. Charles Grassley, R-Ill., and release the 141,000 pages of documents from Kavanaugh's record that are not permitted for public release or discussion without being cleared by committee staff. John Cornyn of Texas to accuse Booker of "conduct unbecoming of a senator".

The BBC's Gary O'Donoghue, in Washington, says the investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election has raised important constitutional questions about the extent to which an incumbent president can be forced to co-operate.

"I think you're thinking of someone and you don't want to tell us", Harris said.

With Booker's act of civil disobedience providing more transparency to Kavanaugh's hearings, many Democrats have rallied behind their colleague, some joining him in breaking Senate rules. Several said they would also release confidential documents, and said they would face the consequences along with Mr. Booker.

And he praised the landmark Supreme Court ruling that President Richard Nixon was required to turn over White House tape recordings and other evidence related to the Watergate scandal.

"No senator deserves to sit on this committee or serve in the Senate, in my view, if they decide to be a law unto themselves and willingly flout the rules of the Senate and the determination of confidentiality and classification".

Since Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, many have questioned him about his loyalty to President Donald Trump, but the judge told Americans where his loyalties lie during his Senate testimony. "Norms are important. Historical practice is relevant to judicial decision-making", he said.

Senate Democrats demand 100,000 withheld Kavanaugh records
The battle over Kavanaugh's documents has been a dominant story line in the fight to replace the retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, while a number of Democrats have expressed opposition to his nomination.

K: I'm not going to rule anything out.

Although the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized a number of unwritten rights over the years-such as the right to privacy, the right of parents to educate their children in private schools, and the right to gay marriage-some legal conservatives maintain that the federal judiciary has no business protecting unenumerated rights at all.

However, the first of at least four days of hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee began with partisan quarreling over the nomination and persistent protests from members of the audience, followed by their arrests as the session frequently became chaotic. In the email, Booker says there's evidence Kavanaugh, when he was an aide to President George W. Bush, suggested it was appropriate to racially profile people to blunt post-911 terrorism.

Republican Orrin Hatch gave Kavanaugh the opportunity to follow-up on an exchange with Sen. Protesters have added to the challenges for Kavanaugh, repeatedly interrupting proceedings.

"I haven't had any inappropriate conversations about that investigation with anyone".

Day two of the Brett Kavanaugh hearings were once again riddled with theatrics.

On Wednesday night, Booker questioned Kavanaugh about racial equality and the treatment of minorities, including laws that allow race to be considered in university admissions.

The question seems prompted by Kavanaugh's statement in the email but there's no real payoff, no gotcha.

The 53-year-old appellate judge answered cautiously when asked about most of those matters, refusing an invitation from Democratic Sen.
