No amount of alcohol is good for your health, study says

Alcohol use was ranked as the seventh leading risk factor for premature death and disability worldwide in 2016 and was

"The conclusions of the study are clear and unambiguous: alcohol is a colossal global health issue", said Robyn Burton of King's College London, another author.

But researchers from the new study said those studies had limitations. Researchers found alcohol use was the leading risk factor for death and disability and accounted for almost 10 per cent of annual global deaths -about 2.8 million annually.

It also concluded that any amount of alcohol consumption, even one drink every now and again, increased the risk of health problems like cancer, cardiovascular disease and tuberculosis. "Alcohol use contributes to health loss from many causes and exacts its toll across the lifespan, particularly among men".

In India in 2016, the prevalence of female drinkers was 4.1 per cent and deaths attributed to alcohol consumption among women was 0.71 per cent (42,000 deaths).

Alcohol was found to protect only against ischemic heart disease - or hardening of the arteries - but the effect was described as small compared to the health risks from drinking.

The combined health risks associated with alcohol outweigh any possible benefits, said the University of Washington's Max Griswold, an author of the analysis, in a statement.

"However, studies have shown that India has a large number of heavy drinkers - more than 75 ml/day or nearly every day of the week".

The researchers calculated alcohol is linked to 2.8million deaths a year around the world.

But in the 15-49 age bracket, alcohol emerged as the most lethal factor, responsible for more than 12 percent of deaths among men, the study found.

Professor Emmanuela Gakidou, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, USA, said, "Alcohol poses dire ramifications for future population health in the absence of policy action today".

They estimate that consuming just one drink per day increases the risk of developing one of 23 alcohol-related health problems by 0.5 per cent, compared with not drinking at all. Globally, one in three people drink alcohol, which is equivalent to 2.4 billion people.

The medical research noted that while women may think that having one glass of wine isn't harmful - they are actually pouring themselves three measures.

"Policies focusing on reducing alcohol consumption to the lowest levels will be important to improve health".

"This study is a stark reminder of the real, and potentially lethal, dangers that too much alcohol can have on our health and that even the lowest levels of alcohol intake increase our risks", said Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the United Kingdom, in a statement.

"Overall, the health risks associated with alcohol rose in line with the amount consumed each day".

"I can't see negatives associated with no drinking".

A lot of them relied on self-reported information, which means people have to remember their drinking habits accurately, which means the data might be flawed or inaccurate, according to CBS.

For years, public health officials have said that, while no one should pick up drinking in search of better health, moderate drinking (defined as up to a drink per day for women and up to two per day for men) probably won't hurt anyone who already imbibes, and may even confer some benefits.
