State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary

Police plan to close more than a dozen streets in downtown Washington and cordon off broad sections of Lafayette Square to separate the opposing demonstrators, said Peter Newsham, chief of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department.

Virginia's Democratic governor, Ralph Northam, pre-emptively declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, a procedural move that freed up additional resources.

In Charlottesville, there will be a commemorative gathering and memorial for Heather Heyer, the woman killed when James Alex Fields Jr drove a vehicle into the gathering of counterprotesters previous year.

"Today we pause to remember the lives lost, and the lives forever changed, by the violence in Charlottesville a year ago".

Two Virginia State Police officers also died in a helicopter crash while assisting police activity related the the rally.

Police blocked off streets and mobilized hundreds of officers for the anniversary of white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"Some of our members are concerned about safety for their staff and guests and came to us with questions as we are a resource for the restaurant community".

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides", Trump said, following the events. "Peace to ALL Americans!" he tweeted. "They are reclaiming that space because past year white supremacists came with their torches and took over that part of campus".

Charlottesville's intense security plan for the anniversary weekend has been greeted with mixed reactions from residents.

- Businesses in the District where white nationalist, white supremacist and neo-Nazis are planning to hold the Unite the Right rally on Sunday have stated they will refuse service to anyone with hate in their heart.

"I think there is blame on both sides", Trump said during a press conference in the lobby of Trump Tower in NY.

University of Virginia students will hold a rally for justice on Saturday night, on the anniversary of the white supremacist tiki-torch march through their campus.

Jason Kessler, 34, organizer of both the Charlottesville rally and Sunday's demonstration, calls himself a "white civil rights" activist and said his goal is to spark a conversation while keeping everyone safe.

Meanwhile, Alan Popovsky, who owns several restaurants with president themes in D.C., said he plans to serve Sunday brunch at his restaurant, Lincoln, and then close for dinner, after his staff said they were anxious about their safety. The president argued that there were "very fine people" on both sides of the rally, seemingly equating the actions of white nationalists with counter-protesters.

The counter-protests in Washington have renewed the debate over whether small demonstrations of racist extremists should be ignored, or greeted with forceful public opposition.
