Dali Mpofu to represent MDC Alliance as they challenge Zim election result

Zimbabwean opposition official Tendai Biti

Chamisa's legal team arrived at the Constitutional Court at the eleventh hour with members of the media having been in wait for at least half a day.

Mnangagwa, who is seeking to reverse Zimbabwe's economic isolation and attract desperately-needed foreign investment, had vowed the elections would be free and fair, and would turn a page on Mugabe's repressive 37-year rule.

"It will no longer happen".

"In the alternative, we seek that there be another election which complies with the dictates of the law", Mpofu said.

The constitution requires a losing presidential candidate to file any challenge within seven days of a victor being declared.

Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration, Cde Obert Mpofu, has stated that the MDC Alliance exposed its hypocrisy in the just ended elections by wanting to win at all costs yet any race produces a victor and a loser.

There will still be a core European Union team to monitor the election petitions in the urgent, and no doubt fiercely fought, court days ahead.

But the legal challenge to his victory is likely to delay his inauguration that was scheduled to take place on Sunday.

The president, the ZANU-PF party and the electoral commission have denied all charges of cheating.

"If [the judges] think the evidence is weak they could throw the case out fairly fast".

Analysts say that the legal challenge has little chance of success given the courts' historic tilt towards ZANU-PF, which has ruled since independence from British colonial rule in 1980. The opposition said the result was rigged.

The MDC had until Friday to lodge its appeal - seven days after the results were announced.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, established under the 2013 constitution, on Friday released a damning report into the post-election crackdown. The case was postponed to next Wednesday.
